Plaza Premium Lounge operates three waiting lounges at Hong Kong airport (HKG), accessible to all travelers departing from the Chinese Special Administrative Region.
I visited the “East Hall” lounge on the evening of Tuesday 8 October 2019, thanks to my Priority Pass card, before boarding a Royal Jordanian economy flight to Amman.
Location, opening hours and entry rules
The Plaza Premium Lounge East Hall welcomes business class passengers of Air India, Air Niugini, Ethiopian Airlines, MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines and Royal Jordanian, as well as those with a top tier status in one of these carriers’ frequent flyer programs.
Members of the independent international networks Diners Club, DragonPass and Priority Pass have access to the lounge regardless of the airline and class of travel.
The doors of the lounge are also open to all, for a fee based on the number of hours you wish to stay: HKD 325.50 for one hour / HKD 581.25 for two hours / HKD 775 for five hours.
The Plaza Premium Lounge East Hall is located in the restricted area. It is the nearest lounge after screening checkpoints. Head towards gate 1 to reach it. It is open 24 hours a day.
Facilities and catering
The Plaza Premium Lounge East Hall is divided into 3 rooms. None is exposed to natural light.
The first room is mainly dedicated to catering.
The center of the room is an alignment of 3 rows configured to accommodate single or accompanied visitors: booths for two people with table and chairs, tables and chairs for families or groups, tables for 2 or 4 people surrounded by a bench and chairs.
The main buffet is located in this first room. When I visited at around 19:00, a complete offer was proposed for dinner: a salad bar, several dishes in sauce with chicken, meat, shrimp or fish, spring rolls and grilled vegetables. A cook prepares Hong Kong soups on request. Various pastries for dessert.
The second room is more focused on work.
In the center, long tables with electrical outlets for laptops. To the side, large club chairs – some in the form of individual boxes with tablet, small lamp and power socket.
Beverages are served in this room: juice fountains, coffee machines, a selection of teas, soft drinks and beers in cans or on draught. Snacks are also available: salad, chips, ham, cheese, steamed ravioli, fruit, etc.
Finally, there’s a third room, small and cosy, for business meetings. It belongs to the adjacent Plaza Premium First lounge. When open to Plaza Premium Lounge visitors, it provides a space for isolation, away from the movements of the rest of the lounge.
Opinion
The Plaza Premium Lounge East Hall at Hong Kong airport is very crowded. A queue can form in front of the entrance, and it was fully occupied at 18:30 that day. Access was possible half an hour later when I returned.
Despite the many passengers, the buffets were constantly stocked with a varied choice.
The Plaza Premium Lounge East Hall delivers a solid service in a more comfortable and productive waiting area than the boarding gates. It is not, however, the place for a quiet moment of sleep.
