The Italian airline ITA Airways, born from the rubble of Alitalia, has joined the Miles & More frequent flyer programme following its takeover by Lufthansa and its exit from the Skyteam alliance. I’ll tell you about the benefits of the programme now enjoyed by ITA Airways passengers while waiting the carrier’s entry into Star Alliance announced for 2026.

Collect miles with ITA Airways

All members of the Miles & More loyalty program earn miles when travelling on a flight operated by ITA Airways.

The number of miles credited varies according to:

  • the type of flight (domestic, intra-European, intercontinental)
  • the travel cabin (business class, premium economy, economy)
  • the fare class paid (coded on a letter of the alphabet and shown on the electronic ticket or itinerary receipt)
  • the distance flown, if applicable.

For domestic flights in Italy, a fixed amount of miles is offered regardless of distance and in accordance with the table below:

Miles & More: miles accumulation chart for a domestic ITA Airways flight
Travel cabin Fare class Fixed miles
Business C, E, J 1,500 miles
D 1,000 miles
I 500 miles
Economy B, Y 1,000 miles
H, K, M, N, S, T, V 500 miles
Q, W, X 250 miles
G, L, O, R 125 miles

For intra-European flights, a flat-rate number of miles is also awarded:

Miles & More: miles accumulation chart for an intra-European ITA Airways flight
Travel cabin Fare class Fixed miles
Business C, E, J 2,000 miles
D 1,250 miles
I 750 miles
Economy B, Y 1,250 miles
H, K, M, N, S, T, V 750 miles
Q, W, X 250 miles
G, L, O, R 125 miles

Please note that ITA Airways flights to/from North Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia) are considered as European flights.

For intercontinental flights, the number of miles awarded is expressed as a percentage of the distance flown in statute miles. To know the distance, simply enter the codes of the departure and arrival airports on the Great Circle Mapper website. Then apply the coefficient corresponding to the fare class paid to the distance:

Miles & More: miles accumulation chart for an intercontinental ITA Airways flight
Travel cabin Fare class Coefficient Minimum
Business C, E, J 200% 1,000 miles
D 150% 750 miles
I 100% 750 miles
Premium Economy P 150% 750 miles
U 125% 750 miles
A 100% 750 miles
Economy B, Y 150% 750 miles
H, K, M, T, V 100% 500 miles
N, S 50% 500 miles
Q, W, X 50% 250 miles
G, L, O, R 25% 125 miles

A minimum number of miles per flight is granted when the calculation formula gives a result lower than this minimum.

For an itinerary comprising several flights operated by ITA Airways (round trip, with stopovers, etc.), each flight must be analyzed separately.

Members with Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle status in Miles & More receive 50% extra miles as part of their Executive Bonus which is extended to flights operated by ITA Airways.

Lounge access with ITA Airways

ITA Airways operates its own lounges at Rome-Fiumicino (Hangar Lounge, Piazza di Spagna), Milan-Linate (Piazza della Scala) and Catania (Piazza Vincenzo Bellini) airports. Elsewhere, it directs its passengers to lounges operated by Lufthansa Group airlines (Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa and Swiss) or by third parties. A list of all lounges is available on the ITA website.

Miles & More members with Frequent Traveller status have access to the lounges of the Lufthansa Group when traveling in economy class on an ITA Airways operated flight, without the possibility of being accompanied by a guest. They are not admitted to lounges belonging to ITA Airways or to third-party lounges.

Senator and HON Circle members have access to both ITA Airways and Lufthansa Group lounges, where they may be accompanied by one adult and one child traveling on the same flight. They also have access to third-party lounges, but with only one guest.

When they take a flight operated by a Lufthansa Group airline (Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, Edelweiss Air, Eurowings, Lufthansa, Lufthansa CityLine and Swiss) in economy class from Rome, Milan or Catania, Senator and HON Circle members have access to ITA Airways lounges, where they may be accompanied by one adult and one child travelling on the same flight. Frequent Traveller members are not admitted.

Redeem miles for an ITA Airways flight

Miles & More miles can be redeemed for an award ticket with ITA Airways.

The number of miles required varies depending on the travel cabin and destination, according to the Award Flights chart in force. A new chart combining price increases and reductions will take effect on 3 June 2025.

Award tickets can be booked using the Award Flight search engine on the Miles & More website.
