The Flying Blue loyalty program led by Air France and KLM grants an overdraft to members who have reached Platinum and Ultimate status, enabling them to get an award ticket without having enough miles. I’ll tell you how to take advantage of an advance of up to 100,000 miles.
What is the Flying Blue miles overdraft?
To qualify for an award flight, a popular reward in the frequent flyer program, it was previously necessary to accumulate the full number of miles required.
In September 2024, Flying Blue introduces the “miles overdraft”.
Miles overdraft allows eligible Flying Blue members to purchase an award ticket without having the full number of miles required for the chosen flights. In other words, in the same way as a bank overdraft, a Flying Blue account can have a negative miles balance after a reward ticket has been issued.
This loan must, of course, be repaid. Any miles earned after using the overdraft facility will be used to cover the overdraft until a credit balance is restored. There is no maximum time limit for accumulating the miles needed to repay the overdraft.
There are no fees or interest charges of any kind: buying an award ticket using the overdraft facility costs no more miles than an award ticket paid outright; 1 new mile earned will repay 1 mile borrowed.
A new award ticket can be booked up to the limit of the authorised overdraft as soon as the miles balance becomes positive again (above zero, whatever the number).
Who can obtain a miles overdraft in Flying Blue?
The Flying Blue miles overdraft is granted only to Platinum and Ultimate members of the loyalty program. Conditions vary according to member’s status.
Platinum members can benefit from an overdraft of up to 50,000 Flying Blue miles, provided they have earned at least 300 XP during the current or previous qualification year.
An Ultimate member can benefit from an overdraft of up to 100,000 Flying Blue miles without any further conditions.
How can I use the Flying Blue miles overdraft?
The Flying Blue miles overdraft can only be used to get an award ticket. All other rewards are excluded.
Members eligible for the miles overdraft may request the award ticket of their choice up to the number of miles actually held in their account, plus the number of miles authorised to be overdrawn. For example, a Flying Blue Platinum member who has earned 40,000 miles can purchase an award ticket worth 90,000 miles.
To book an overdraft award ticket, contact the Platinum Service Line.
The overdraft facility can only be used for one award ticket at a time, even if the credit limit is only partially used. As soon as the balance of the Flying Blue account becomes overdrawn, it is no longer possible to issue another award until the loan has been fully repaid (miles balance back in positive territory).
